Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying these drugs must be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication report a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
