Everyone is Invited to Become the Additional Haim Sisters Member.
"Any idea when you're interviewing the band?" an inquiry reads. "My request was to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."
There's just a key snag: The sender also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple famous admirers have openly begged for the role.
It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award nominees.
Similar to the best groups, they're a close gang. Their music videos frequently show them striding in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such pure exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I want to be part of that, too."
"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the biggest honor. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to form a group."
"Therefore all gets an invitation to be the honorary Haim sister."
Grammy Milestone
The band have called into their homes, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.
They're presently celebrating the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in the running for the prize.
"I tune into the lists every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"
The weight of the nomination resonates with the sisters.
"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "However we're just grateful for the women that inspired us."
Heartbreak and Laughter
The album was born from a phase of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that unique liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to let go.
The words follow endings and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.
"I adore way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."
Development of Style
That recent confidence required a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.
For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drums.
"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.
"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."
Experiences and Collective Camaraderie
The band's candor fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their personal misadventures.
A former partner left Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.
"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."
A Confident Legacy
It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.
They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global following.
But the sister act will always be their primary priority.
"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
