The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
